Default Jay-Z To Do The First Concert At Arizona Stadium Since 1977

The lineup for the first concert at Arizona Stadium since 1977 is literally one of a kind. Billed as the Last Smash Platinum Bash, the April 29 concert will feature Jay-Z, Kelly Clarkson, Third Eye Blind and the Veronicas.
You won't see the lineup for this concert anywhere else, as it's not part of any tour. Presented by the Associated Students of the University of Arizona, it's a one-night-only show.
And get this: The opening act will be a Tucson-area band, chosen in a Caliente contest. See next page for details.
The last concert at Arizona Stadium was Fleetwood Mac's 1977 show, which drew 67,000 fans on a hot August day. Tickets topped out at $10.
Next month's show won't rival that one in terms of attendance. In order to preserve the football field, only 17,000 tickets will be sold. The stadium's seating capacity for football games is now about 57,000.
The Tucson Arena, for comparison's sake, can seat roughly 9,500, and the UA's McKale Center holds about 14,500. The Pima County Fairgrounds has hosted more than 25,000 fans for concerts by Santana and other artists.
Here's a little about the four main acts:
    Jay-Z
This New York rapper is one of the most beloved and respected rappers alive.
Jay-Z built a hip-hop empire starting in 1996 with his classic debut, "Reasonable Doubt," and hasn't slowed down for a second.
He might be best known for his third album, 1998's "Vol 2: Hard Knock Life," which brought Jay-Z into the mainstream with radio-dominating songs like "Hard Knock Life (Ghetto Anthem)," "Can I Get A . . .," and "Money Ain't A Thang." It went on to win a Grammy for best rap album.
Jay-Z has transcended hip-hop by becoming a fashion and record-label mogul. He co-founded Rocawear clothing and Roc-A-Fella Records (home to Kanye West and other artists) and later become president of Def Jam Records. Along the way, he feuded with fellow NYC rapper Nas and married R&B superstar Beyoncé. He retired from rap following 2003's "The Black Album" and returned three years later with "Kingdom Come." Last year, he signed a huge $150 million deal with concert behemoth Live Nation.
Jay-Z's last album, 2007's "American Gangster," inspired by the film of the same name, was his 10th No. 1 album on the Billboard Top 200 chart. Only one other solo artist, Elvis Presley, has scored that many No. 1 albums (The Beatles had 19).
Jay-Z should overtake the King with his next album, "The Blueprint 3," expected later this year. It's produced by Kanye West.
    Essential album: "The Blueprint," 2001.
Songs to download: "Hard Knock Life (Ghetto Anthem)," "Big Pimpin'," "Dirt Off Your Shoulder."
    Kelly Clarkson
The first "American Idol" from the smash Fox talent show to parlay the victory into success with more than 56 million albums sold throughout the world.
Clarkson's debut album, 2003's "Thankful," went two-times-platinum off the strength of singles such as "Miss Independent" and "A Moment Like This."
Her follow-up, 2004's "Breakaway," solidified Clarkson as more than an "Idol" fluke with the smash single "Since U Been Gone." "Breakaway" has since gone platinum six times.
Clarkson's career hit its biggest bump when she battled legendary label head Clive Davis over the artistic direction of her 2007 album, "My December."
Although the album still went platinum, it was seen as a pretty big disappointment following the runaway success of "Breakaway."
The pop singer rebounded in 2009 with her latest album, "All I Ever Wanted," which debuted at No. 1 earlier this month.
    Essential album: "Breakaway," 2004.
Songs to download: "Since U Been Gone," "Miss Independent," "My Life Would Suck Without You."
    Third Eye Blind
The infectious anthems created by this San Francisco alt-rock act won many devotees in the '90s. Led by frontman Stephan Jenkins, the group's 1997 debut spawned a number of hit singles, such as "Semi-Charmed Life" and "Jumper," and its 1999 follow-up, "Blue," did OK, too. Unfortunately, the band's last album of original material was in 2003. A new album is rumored for a summer release.
Essential album: "Third Eye Blind," 1997.
Songs to download: "Semi-Charmed Life," "Jumper," "Deep Inside of You."
    The Veronicas
This poppy twin sister Australian dance-rock group counts influences from AC/DC to Shiny Toy Guns.
The duo of Jessica and Lisa Origliasso released its debut album, "The Secret Life of …" in 2006. Its second album, "Hook Me Up," surfaced in 2007 and spawned the single "Untouched," which has sold more than 1 million downloads and broke into the top 20 on Billboard's Hot 100 chart last month.
The pair is said to have a new album in the works.
Essential album: "The Secret Life of …" 2006.
Songs to download: "Untouched," "4ever," "Everything I'm Not."
