Red Tails, about the Tuskegee Airmen who were the first black fighter pilots to serve in World War II, did far better than expected.
It opened in second place, and made an estimated $19.1 million, according to 20th Century Fox! Lucas spent 20 years pursuing the project, and recently revealed he couldn’t get any studio to finance the film because of an all-black cast. He finally decided to put up the money himself, and spent $58 million on the production budget and another $35 in distribution costs.
Red Tails is a victory for Lucas.
Red Tails did well throughout the country — theaters in African-American markets did especially well. The top grossing theaters were in New York, Los Angeles and Atlanta.
